Iraqis urged to arm themselves
Not that Iraqis haven't been arming themselves to kill each other, but this just makes it more formal.
'[Tariq al-Hashimi] said the government should provide communities with money, weapons and training and "regulate their use by rules of behavior."'
Yeah...there's no possible way this could ever go wrong...
"They're not rules so much as guidelines really..."

So the headline read...
Jun. 26th, 2007 01:40 pm"Benoit strangled wife, smothered son"
And I thought. Huh, wonder who that is. I know there's the professional wrestler Chris Benoit, but it can't be him. Must be some other guy...
Holy Crap!
Oh, and then he killed himself.
"Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son."
No! You think?
Crazy...

Beware the Military-Industrial Complex...
May. 14th, 2007 09:53 amWhat does $456 Billion buy?
I especially like the fact that we could convert our nations fleet of cars to ethanol (with enough cash left over to make ethanol readily available at gas stations), but it only pays for 1 year of medicare.

Ding Dong the Lich is Dead
Apr. 27th, 2007 09:15 amHey,
So sure, there's lots of other great things to talk about, but I'm most interested in the fact that Jack Valenti died.
Y'know how you can shoot someone and still get a PG or PG-13 rating, but you can't show a boob without it automatically going to R and an erect penis puts you squarely in X? Yeah, that's all his fault. I'm sure he was a very nice guy personally, but his ratings system is a complete disaster.
Will this change? Well, probably not anytime soon, but with the chief architect gone and growing criticism perhaps a more realistic (or at least more transparent) process will come along.

Oil, oil everywhere...
Feb. 23rd, 2007 09:57 am"MEND had shown that 20 guys in speedboats could affect oil prices around the world."
A Vanity Fair article about the violence surrounding oil production in the Niger Delta.
...and a slideshow of the poverty of the Delta villages, and the magic-enhanced warriors of MEND, a rebel group fighting for local control of oil reserves.
