A Faithful Review

Hey,
So I just finished zipping through Faith by John Love. It was a really good read.
So there’s this mysterious alien ship called Faith. She shows up, destroys anything that stands in her way, sometimes pulls elaborate pranks and then disappears. Three hundred years ago, her arrival heralded the end of the Sakhran Empire and gave the human-centric Commonwealth the room it needed to expand.
Now she’s back.
Earth’s final line of defence are the Outsider class vessels. The most cutting-edge technology crewed by the most alien-thinking people they can find. Which essentially means brilliant sociopaths and psychopaths. It’s hoped that their unconventional thinking allows them to defeat unconventional opponents.
The Outsider Charles Manson has been sent to intercept Faith and stop her from ravaging the Commonwealth as she did the Sakhran. It’s Commander, Aaron Foord, has been thinking long and hard about how he’s going to take on Faith and win.
Like I said, it’s a fun read. Faith and Foord play a game of cat and mouse though an entire solar system and everyone has a few surprises up their sleeves. The book has gotten some comparisons to Moby DIck in that it’s an obsessive hunt for a target that’s more force of nature than prey. This one skips the boring stuff and mostly sticks to the action. The characters aren’t terribly deep, but they change as they continue to fight against Faith.
So yeah, it was a fun starship duel and a great book to kick off the year.
