I now own a hatbox.
I need it because I have a hat. A new hat. A derby, actually.
See, I got cast in the PMRP Big Broadcast show (more details to come). Last year, I got cast and needed a derby. We found one but it was comically small on me. I feel like a proper gentleman's gentleman needs a good fitting hat, so I went down to the hipped haberdashery in town to pick one up.
I went to Salmagundi in Jamaica Plain. They had a black derby in my size. They were also crammed full of hats in all shapes and sizes and various accessories. The staff was friendly and cheerful and the owners are really big on hats. They talked about their trips to various hat factories and spoke with passion about the various creations on display. I was sorely tempted to pick up an additional hat or two -- there was quite the snazzy Panama hat on display.
The problem is that 1.) the hats are high-quality, woven deals and I couldn't imagine having that nice a hat for day-to-day wear and 2.) Nothing really meshed with my t-shirt and jeans ensemble that I usually go with. I'd have to seriously upgrade my wardrobe for most of these hats. Then too, I've had my boonie hat for ages so change is eyed with some suspicion and fear.
I'm thinking about going back later this year when their fall hats come in. I'm hoping the heavier materials might make me feel better about investing in another nice hat.
Nevertheless, I now have a nice derby for costume/formal occasions and it's nice enough that I figured it should really go into a hatbox for storage. So that's why I was wandering down the street with a hatbox dangling from my wrist.

Date: 2011-08-22 08:03 pm (UTC)It was pretty hot out for skipping. But let's say the Mary Tyler Moore Theme was playing anyway. :)
