If you like samurai movies, you probably want to go check out 13 Assassins now playing at the Kendall Sq. Theatre.

It's a Samurai movie. The half-brother of the shogun is a sadistic bastard and needs to be taken out. But, y'know, shogun's half-brother. So the head of the justice department finds a retired samurai and says "It'd be a shame if something bad were to happen to the half-brother. I'm giving you my personal seal and a wad of cash and I don't know a damn thing about what you're going to do".

So the samurai rounds up a squad of fellow samurai and these 13 guys take on an army.

It hits all the usual samurai movie motifs about honor and loyalty and duty and whatnot. The last 45 minutes? Nothing but samurai fights. The movie isn't all that bloody. Mostly it's the usual "hero swings and the bad guy yells and falls dead", but there are some bloody/gory bits here and there. Oddly, the squick-iest moment happens early on to establish that the bad guy is someone who needs to be killed and that the good guy is motivated to kill him.

Anyway, it's was a fun little samurai movie.
