Hey,

Picked up a batch of comics last night. Here's the highlight reel:

Fall of the Hulks Alpha -- So I don't normally follow mainstream comics all that much because cross-overs and other crap just make the baby Jesus cry. But I'm on board for this one. The greatest criminal minds in the Marvel universe team up for the mother of all Intellectual Property Thefts. It's a really great issue. It's got super-apes courtesy of the Red Ghost, the Leader handles narration and ironic self-awareness duties, and Dr. Doom is a dick to everyone.

Oh and it's got MODAK in it so you should've already bought it. No? How about Undersea SCUBA Action MODAK!? If that doesn't make you want to buy this you don't love comics.

So yeah, I'm on-board.

New Mutants #6-7 -- Speaking of crossovers that make the baby Jesus cry. So this is part of something called Necrosha X which appears to be Marvel's answer to Blackest Night -- i.e. lots of dead people coming back as undead/zombie types to menace the living. Whoo. Not impressed, but still in love with New Mutants so I'm hoping this blows over quickly.

Young Avengers -- Man, this could be a good comic if it ever got the chance to be about, you know, the Young Avengers fighting crime. As it is, they've only been getting these limited-run special-edition tied-to-the-current-crossover series that don't let them really develop as a group.

S.W.O.R.D. #2 -- So it's basically SHIELD in space. Also being co-opted by Norman Osborn's goon crew and the Dark Reign crap. The Beast is poorly drawn and looks like Booga the kangaroo mutant from Tank Girl. That said, it's got this nice Space Adventure vibe that I'm enjoying. We'll see how it goes.

Beasts of Burden -- Beasts of Burden. Talking animals fight the occult. This episode, the honorary cat member of the team goes looking for the witch-cat familiar he fell in love with last issue. This is another really nice book and although the large cast of dogs kind of run together, it's just so well done in general that you should really give it a shot.

Ignition City -- The final issue of the 5-issue run. Um...I really liked the premise of the book. All of Earth's Space Heroes (analogues of Flash Gordon, Dan Dare, etc.) are confined to a small island when Earth gives up on outer space. The daughter of one of these hero's comes to the island to find out what happened to her dad. The ending to this was pretty "meh". It's like "BIG REVEAL! ...and now we're done" when you would logically expect to see another issue or two where they hash out the consequences of that. I dunno. Maybe there will be a follow on.

North 40 -- Seriously you guys. This series is SO GOOD. Small town in a hick county gets overrun with lovecraftian weirdness. This issue? They stop Cthulhu from eating everyone. And the mayhem is all under the control of a goth chick and a D&D nerd who opened the Necronomicon and have differing ideas about what's important. So. Much. Fun.

so yeah, that's what was in the bin for me this week.

later
Tom

Mental Organism Designed Always for Killing?

I might pick up the Hulk stories as a collection at some point. Don't care enough about it otherwise.

I really need to make my own comics post... haven't done that in forever!

SWORD is written by Kieron Gillen, who is generally pretty cool...

I am so sick of this Dark Reign crap... I think I started to become tired of Marvel when the Skrull thing came about. Civil War, okay, but they should have just left it at that for a while. Just piling on metaplot after metaplot after metaplot is just... asinine.

With the new year, they should now return us to our normally scheduled individual comic plots.

This is why the Marvel ones get pushed down the pile, and I read titles like Doctor Who, Echo, Usagi Yojimbo, and heck, even the GI Joe titles before I get to the Marvels.
