I picked up some comics this weekend. Here's what I thought:
Marvel Zombies -- I got the latest arc of these, but dropped it and dumped the title from my box. Played out. What I really want to see is a story involving all the marvel characters who couldn't become zombies and how they'd react. This would be Vision, Machine Man, Ultron, and H.E.R.B.I.E. It should include Ghost Rider, but apparently it doesn't. Also, I would totally read about zombie MODOK.
New Mutants -- they changed artists between issues 4 and 5. Wildly different styles and a little jarring. But on balance the new style isn't terrible. I'm into this because it was really the first comic series I loved as a kid. Then Cable killed it. Now...now it's finding its feet, but at least the old team is back.
Dark Reign Young Avengers -- Man, Young Avengers was so good and I was hoping they'd go back to it, but now it's all crossovers and event-related dickery and gah! Marvel does some of its best stuff when it doesn't worry about continuity and I think Young Avengers really needs some more time to do stories that are...about the Young Avengers. Still hanging onto it though.
Beasts of Burden -- Evan Dorkin of Milk and Cheese fame is doing the writing for these tales of a band of pets and their fight against the supernatural. This month's issue was just...disturbing. The only real beef I've got with this title is that there's like 6 dogs and one cat and about 3 of the dogs look very similar.
Incognito -- A noir-superhero kind of deal. Six issue run that just finished up and it was really good. The bonus is Jess Nevins does a commentary about some aspect of pulp fiction at the end of each comic so...total win there.
Planetary Vol. 1 -- Hey, this really is a pretty good series about a team of people digging into the hidden weirdness of the 20th Century (when that weirdness is caused by spillover from the multiverse). I'm sorry I waited so long to look into this. I bet it was a treat getting these high-quality issues month after month after month on a regular, almost clockwork, basis. Surely that steady stream of goodness offsets the convenience of having them all packaged up for me. :)
(as an aside -- where's my next Pirates of Coney Island dammit!?)
North 40 -- This title is completely awesome and is rapidly becoming a favorite. Here's the premise: A goth girl and D&D nerd flip through the Necronomicon and accidentally let hell loose. Now Conover County is isolated from the rest of the world. Of the people trapped inside, a third are dead, a third have been horribly warped, and the last third is relatively normal. A select few are going to try and put Cthulhu in his place, but they'll have to deal with small town problems first. If you like the Southern Gothic feel of True Blood, you might really get a kick out of this as well.

Date: 2009-10-26 06:27 pm (UTC)Agreed. That's why I think Marvel has repeatedly been airborne over the great white since, well... Civil War. Civil War had a bit more... buying power. Skrull Invasion and Dark Reign just loses it for me.
I already dropped Thunderbolts since the Civil War ended... maybe I'll be dropping most of the Marvel stuff...
