blowout

Hi,

I hate unexpected emergencies.

I took a corner badly today and rammed my tire against the curb. When I got out to check, the tire had a bulge in the sidewall. That didn't look promising, but there was a tire place across the street. So we go over and they agree that it's probably not a good idea to try and drive back to Boston on it.

Luckily, they actually had a tire that would fit my car. I've got these ridiculous odd-sized tires and was afraid no place would have them on hand. But they had them. They were expensive (see, odd-size, hard-to-get sentence previous), but they were there and the tire was fixed in an hour and I feel better about driving home tomorrow.

It just sucks is all.

:(
Tom

That happened to one of my tires years ago in Worcester - someone had left the grating off a storm drain at the corner by the old Shawmut building (across the street from City Hall) and I couldn't avoid it because of traffic in the outside lane. How it avoided being a full-dress blowout I don't know, but I ended up having to change it in the bus lane next to City Hall, and while I was at it a motorcycle cop came and hassled me for being in the bus lane, like I had some kind of a choice in the matter.

Yes sir, the City of Worcester. All the civic incompetence of a small town with all the impersonal cruelty of a big city.

Ooof. It does suck, and I'm sorry you had to deal with it. Glad it's over, and so glad that if it had to happen, it happened across the road from the tire place.

Good thing you took care of it immediately. Could have been much worse. Glad everyone is OK.

It sucks, but you did the right thing. A bulging sidewall means you delaminated the sidewall and that was the outer rubber skin ballooning out under the internal pressure. That's a blowout waiting to happen, especially if you take it on a highway.

I did something similar some years back.

I see you conveniently forgot to mention that you *gasp* ALMOST TOOK OUT A BIKER *gasp* had it not been for your quick-thinking co-pilot.

I did something like that
