Howard Waldrop is a great treasure. Back when I went to ArmadilloCons one of the featured events was "The Howard Waldrop Reading." Everybody went, we packed the ballroom, and Howard just read whatever he was working on at the time. One of the best ever was when he made them turn out all the lights and read us a ghost story, by candlelight. I don't remember the details of the story, but I still remember how Howard looked, lit by just one big candle, sitting crosslegged on a table at the front of the ballroom.

That said, he's wrong about a couple of things, one of which is Midol. It's not ibuprofen, it's acetaminophen (Tylenol) mixed with caffeine. These days you can get it formulated with ibu (called "Midol for Cramps" or somesuch) and even with naproxen sodium (called something like "Midol Maximum") thrown in. But the historical version was always acetaminophen.

Not that I've lived most of my life with women who had bad PMS and cramping or anything...
