Man,

The amount of time it takes to put together a major baddie for D&D (like, say, an ancient gargantuan blue dragon) is just ridiculous.

Now, sure, it's all one big monster, but any decent adventure will have a few baddies who all need a work up and collectively they'll be just as much work if not more so. Stat-block baddies aren't nearly as bad (you've got a stat block and stuff), but if it doesn't come from a can, be prepared to do a lot of preparation.

Tom

-Don't worry, he doesn't need to be perfect. Why not take a break? Get some dinner, sack out in front of the TV . . . just veg out until, say, Sunday at 11:30. Please?

You don't know how tempted I was to just build his "spells known" list on the fly as I cast them.

-Hey, so long as we get to do the same thing . . .

DM Genie is a nice tool for walking you through much of the arcana of d20 game prep. The UI is a bit of a mess - clearly someone's amateur project that got out of hand - but it works.

The GM's watchword of any long-term D&D campaign is: recycling.

The baddies don't =actually= come back from the dead, but their stats and spell lists sure do...

Yeah, I used to hand-craft the whole deal, but now I've got a hundred 3x5 cards with stats. And it's a whole lot easier to start adding numbers to attack bonuses and hit points than it is to crank out new baddies whole-cloth...

And yes, dragons are fairly time-intensive. 'Cuz what cantrips does a CR 21 spellcasting badass monster =really= need?

We need cheap Indian GMs to which to outsource difficult gaming preparation.
