I have a problem conceptually with Starbuck as a woman. (I don't watch the show.) I also had a problem when I saw a teeny tiny bit of the end of the new TV-movie version of Annie: Daddy Warbucks was still bald, but Grace was black. Why do that? Just to change the demographic? It added an unnecessary aspect, IMO.
Well, I could go off on here about how I think it is right that we be allowed to update our mythology to reflect our current society, so that all the heroes/characters the next generation see aren't white guys. But I can understand your point as well w/r/t demographic pandering just to seem hip and modern and I'm really too tired to get into a flamefest with somebody I don't know. So yeah, There we go.
I know that we want to reflect a multicultural society, and I think it's really cool that Sesame Street has a Russian baby muppet and Zoe and other Hispanic muppets and a diverse range of kids (multicultural and various levels of ability). I just cling to my childhood staples, like Starbuck being male, Grace being white, Michael Jackson being black and Strawberry Shortcake and her friends being on the short and rounded side instead of the tallish and skinny side. *shrug* Thanks for putting off the flaming. }:-) (At least they brought the EZ-Bake Oven and Shrinky-Dink back, improved or unharmed.)
