Hey,

So I stayed up way too late last night finishing off Debatable Space by Philip Palmer. This should give you some idea of how good it is.

But for a more concrete example: the writing was so strong that I wound up caring a great deal about a character who didn't even make it 30 pages into the book. It's odd. There are very few really memorable bits of dialog but the theme and ideas sweep you up and send you rushing along. The basic gist is that notorious Space Pirate(TM) Captain Flanagan kidnaps Lena, the daughter of Cheo -- the dictator of all Humanity. They hope to ransom Lena for a bundle and carve out a free zone of their own. Things promptly go awry from there.

You get all the great stuff, space pirates, space battles, alien worlds, alien beings, sidekick AI's, con games, future history, and all the rest. You also get a lot of insight into the characters and the dreams/ideals that drive them, which makes a pretty average sci-fi plot into something pretty wonderful. This is probably the best sci-fi that I've read so far this year and it's certainly an engaging read.
