Hey,

So last night I saw "Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic" at the Coolidge. It was part of the Bosotn Jewish Film Festival. Sarah herself was in attendance. She is, by the way, teh HAWTT. What she's doing with Jimmy Kimble is a mystery and probably a sorrowful tragedy for humanity.

Right, so, the movie. Um...not so good. It was mostly just her one-woman show on the big screen. And that really seemed to be a waste of the medium. Look, her live performances are great cause you're right there and can see her. When she's just this giant projection...it loses something. You think "this would be so much better on televsion".

Was it funny? Sometimes. It wasn't "Aristocrats" funny, although it got close every so often. I also suspect that the audience was part of the problem. So it's the Boston Jewish Film Festival, right? So, as you might expect, Jewish people made up the vast majority of the audience. And fine, sure. But just because it's a movie about a Jewish commedian, that doesn't mean you'll find her humor funny. In particular, if you were alive during the holocaust (and I've no doubt that some people there were), when she starts making fun of it...you might not find it funny. So there was a real sense of tension. Sarah Silverman does raunchy and racial sterotype humor. You don't like that? Then you really shouldn't be at the movie.

But even when I try and separate out the audience problems from the actual content...I'm still left thinking it was really uneven. Her deadpan is killer, but the material really needs more work.

The movie will be coming out for general release at the end of Nov. (apparently it'll be at the Kendall). Honestly, I'd wait for it to come out on DVD.

Later
Tom
