Good gravy! In my day, Dungeons and Dragons had dozens upon dozens of obscure pole-arms, most of which were inherently inferior to some other weapon (even if you did actually use the largely incomprehensible 'speed factor rules'), and none of which ever got actually used by a single person, because you clearly needed to swing swords to have a fair chance of being able to use magic stuff you found; if you were a 'role-play' type you might pick an Axe instead, and if you really needed reach, at least a spear could be thrown at need. And we liked it!
