Almost all of my gamers tend to take Improved Initiative. Combine with Ludicrous Dex and we often have half 20+ initiatives.
I like your bard. I tend to leave the bad habits to players, though, since it's pretty easy to dump an NPC who's got an annoying drawback.
The problem is that we're dead certain it's trapped and we need someone to disarm it. That person should ideally be the rogue and not the scout.
My party tends to substitute "person with most health" for the rogue in these circumstances. It is probably not coincidental that Pygment's character's preferred method of picking locks is kicking down the door.
