Aug. 20th, 2012 09:58 amHi,
So I had a relaxed, but fun Sunday. The plan was to go down to the ICA to see the Os Gemos exhibit at the ICA.
But first, brunch.
We decided to try someplace new and we settled on Catalyst in Kendall Sq. I'd heard good things about it from a foodie friend of mine and was pleasantly surprised to discover that they had brunch offerings. So we decided to give it a whirl.
Here's the deal about brunch. Quality is important, but quantity is also a big factor. This is what keeps a lot of greasy spoon diners in the running for brunch even as other places serve more tantalizing fare. Catalyst sits firmly on the quality side of things -- and maybe just a tad too much on the quality side of things. So everything was absolutely delicious, but I wish there had been a bit more of it.
On the other hand, we started with Banana Bread with a Dulce de Leche spread. I had some oatmeal with sour cream and a banana's foster yumminess on top. It was great, but it came in a small crock so I backed it up with the poached egg and beef tournedo floating in hollandaise and goat cheese grits. All of this with some tasty drinks from the bar.
So yeah, it was amazing food, but not quite an excellent brunch. I do want to come back and try them again for supper sometime.
After that, we drove down to the ICA. This was my first trip to the museum. I was a little surprised at how small it is. There were only a couple of exhibits. We went to see the Brazilian street art of Os Gemos, but I was more impressed with the glass/mirror art of Josiah McElheny -- he had some really great pieces.
After touring the ICA, we went for a short walk along the harbor's edge. We took a more direct route back to our car and on the way we passed a parking lot that had a couple of flashy looking cars so we walked over. Apparently there was some sort of exotic car show going on and this was a holding area for some of them. So we got a close-up look at Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, a Bentley, a McLaren F1, and some other high-end sports cars (alas, no Bugatti Veyron). It was a lot of fun to see them all just hanging out in a parking lot -- and it also reminded me that my mid-life crisis vehicle will have to be an Escalade. I am not exaggerating in the least when I say that none of the Lamborghini's came up to my waist. I was also surprised at just how much knowledge on sports cars I'd picked up by playing video games (probably another reason I shouldn't be allowed to actually drive them).
We went back to my car (and I reassured it that I still loved it very much) and we went back to Davis Sq. to hang out a bit and also take in the Davis Sq. flea market. Didn't pick anything up, but it was interesting to browse around. I did see this toybox done up to look like a boxcar from the 50's/60's. My inner 6 year-old would've loved it. The only problem is that the box wasn't on wheels or casters and there was only the freight car, no engine or caboose. We had some snacks at Diesel and then browsed at Comicazi where I picked up a complete run of Captain Britain and M13 for half off and then we went home.
All in all, it was a pretty good day.
