Vigilantism is fun!
Jan. 22nd, 2011 09:24 pmHey,
So I caught The Green Hornet this afternoon. It wasn't great, but it wasn't as dire as some people make out. It's odd because my understanding that GH started out as a rather grim and gritty pulp hero but this movie has a campy Batman TV show vibe to it. I mean, it is Seth Rogan as the Green Hornet so yeah, more goofy than gritty.
So it's weird when the movie briefly looks in on the logical consequences of the Green Hornet's brand of vigilantism. Innocent people and unwitting cops occasionally get caught in the crossfire. I feel like if you want to be campy, then the violence should also wind up oddly consequence-free, the bad guy getting caught and going to jail rather than killed.
Oh, and the villain, played by Christoph Waltz is a complete treat to watch. He's a serious bad-guy but he's also struggling with self-image issues and it's fun to watch him work through it. Also, Cameron Diaz is kinda fun to watch in this movie. It's not a huge part but she holds her own and it avoids a lot of the cliche love interest pitfalls.
So yeah, some mindless fun.
