Dark Review-age
Jun. 27th, 2010 10:03 pmHey,
So I zipped through Dark Voyage by Alan Furst. Like most of Mr. Furst's books, this is an espionage novel set during the early years of WWII when Germany looked to be unstoppable and clandestine networks across Europe were scrambling to find solutions.
This particular book is a bit light on actual spy work. Instead, we have Eric DeHaan, captain of the merchant ship Noordendam out of Holland. Now Holland is under German control and his bosses have made the ship available to British naval Intelligence. They have the ship repainted as the neutral Spanish vessel Santa Rosa. The ship is sent on various missions in the Mediterranean and Baltic seas to help advance the allied cause. For the ragtag crew on board the ship, it's a nerve-wracking war where a coat of paint is their only protection.
Like I say, less espionage and more merchant marine action, but still a lot of fun.
