Hi,

Wanted something cheap and breezy to read so I picked up Liar's Peak by Robin Laws (yes, that Robin Laws). Liar's Peak is set in the Games Workshop fantasy world of Warhammer, so in most respects it's even more derivative than the typical fantasy novel. But I was just looking for something to read and Mr. Laws is generally a pretty good writer so with expectations sufficiently set, I was ready to go.

The story follows on Angelika Fleischer, a looter of battlefields by trade, but it's a business she intends to get out of. She's cashed in years of work on a valuable ring and hopes to settle down somewhere nice. As you might imagine, there are complications.

I asked for light and inconsequential and that's what I got. Probably won't be persuing other Warhammer books any time real soon.

Hey,

I've got a few game ideas stewing in my head:

1.) Vampires -- I really like the fresh take on the subject in White Wolf's new revamp (pardon the pun) of the World of Darkness line. I feel like they're a lot more predatory and much less like goth-y posers. But I also feel like more could be done. I'd like to start with the basics in Requiem, tweak it up a little more (first thing, they can hang out in sunlight, although daytime activities may be without hoopy powers). I sort of want to mix Vampire with Delta Green or Conspiracy X so you've got Vampires guiding humanity and protecting them from horrors beyond the stars, but I'm afraid it might go a little too super-hero-y. I just want a more intelligent predator of the night.

2.) Ancient Shores -- Ancient Greece, 435 BC, the Peloponnesian War is on the horizon and Athens and Sparta are duelling for position. Players would be the leaders of a single Athenian warship cruising around the Aegean Sea. So it's one part Star Trek, one part Master and Commander, and one part Jason and the Argonauts. There'd be a persistent Spartan nemesis ship, strange and exotic lands...all the good stuff.
