Movie Review: Lord of War
Sep. 19th, 2005 11:04 amHey,
Also this weekend I got a chance to see Lord of War. It was a good movie, but for some reason, I expected that it was going to be more of a black comedy. There are one or two kinda funny bits, but it was really more of a crime noir film and a sharp commentary on the state of international weapon sales. So there's a bit of disconnect in my head over what I expected and what I got.
Again, not that it's a bad movie in any way. It runs for a full two hours and you don't really notice it too much until near the end, and then the conculsions start to kick in and the movie pulls you effortlessly along to the end. The other thing about the movie that kinda tweaks you is the fact that while there's a lot of moral ambiguity and stuff, the obvious "bad guy" goes through a lot but ultimately never really changes a great deal. He neither makes a dramatic new choice in his life nor does he make "the bad chioce" and get punished for it. Which is actually fine for this movie because then you think "Huh, now I'm wondering about the stuff that happened in this film" as opposed to "huh, that was a nice diversion".
Ultimately, if the subject of international arms smuggling interests you or you like to ponder your films, the movie is worthwhile.
