1.) John Gregory Betancourt is a hateful, hateful man. And why does this total stranger earn my irrational, but all-consuming wrath?

He's writing the "prequel" trilogy of Amber books.

Look people, Zelazny couldn't even get the sequel right and it was his baby.

Repeat after me: The Corwin Chronicles are the only true canon. Everything else is just a written record of someone's Amber DRPG Campaign.

And now, onto a more positive note:

2.) Rush out right now and buy a copy of BattleBall. Heck at Toysrus.com you can even get 2 for the price of one.

A critic of this game would say that rather than spend 45 minutes on the game you could just roll off against your opponent and call the low roll the winner. And it's true, you are totally at the mercy of a Lady Fortune who delights in your misery. Strategize all you want, in the end, the dice will betray you.

Still, that's a small price to pay compared to the fun you can have. The game depicts an ultra-violent futuristic football game and it comes with a huge gameboard, lots of plastic minis for the players and a huge wad of dice. The rules are light, breezy, and wide-open for customization.

Set up the ball, roll off to see who goes first, and let the carange begin. Soon the field will be littered with wreckage, your team will be whittled away to a few guys and it will all hinge on a long-shot plan that will be thwarted, saved, thwarted, and saved again by the clatter of dice.

I think the real joy of this game lies in seeing just how far you can stick your hand down into the jaws of defeat and still pluck out that Victory. Hands down the best example last night was when Shaughn was down to just one guy, facing off against a field of 4-5. He swung wide past the wreckage, dodged a defender, and then maxed out his movement roll to squeak into the end zone for the win.

I'm not quite sure how much replay value the game has, but it's fast and fun and gets the blood pumping. Check it out. Or swing by the apartment and we'll throw down.

Tom

ps. I'm thinking about getting a GameBoy. I'd like to get the SP. Anyone know where I might find a good deal on the gear? Should I just wait for Christmas specials?
