Huh. Our rice cooker wants about a 2:3 rice:water ratio for white rice, or about 1:2 for brown rice; nowhere close to the 1:4 you seem to be going with. I wonder if different brands differ that much, or if one of us (and I have no idea which) is just way off on how much water we should be using...
