Premium Review
Aug. 26th, 2012 12:03 pmHey,
So last night after a lovely BBQ, I went down to the movie theatre to catch a showing of Premium Rush. This is a movie that should've come out about a month ago when the temperatures were in the 90's because it's the perfect "let's go to the ice-cold movie theatre and watch something mindless but fun for a while to beat the heat". It wasn't a great piece of cinematography, but it was fun.
The plot: Bike messenger Wiley (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has to deliver a message halfway across New York. He's being chased down by mad dog cop Det. Monday (Michael Shannon).
That's it. My only complaint is that the movie didn't hew even more closely to it's essential nature. The explanation about what the MacGuffin is and why the cop wants it are great, an extended "because shut up that's why" explanation that's well executed, but the chase itself kinda breaks down and resets about halfway through when it should've just gone on and on.
But it's a minor quibble. There's frantic street biking, BMX-style trick riding, a neat "collision-vision" effect showing how Wiley picks his routes.
And it ends with a moral we can all relate to: Bike messengers are assholes.
Stay for the credits and the bonus scene showing the aftermath of Gordon-Levitt's on-set accident where he goes through the rear window of a taxicab.
