Review from the Couch
Nov. 28th, 2008 02:58 pmHey,
So now that I've written a small book, I can go back to reading them. This time I picked up a short book called Couch by Benjamin Parzybok and finished it off between Thanksgiving food binges.
Couch is about three roommates, Thom, Erik and Tree who are pulled together by chance and just as quickly forced out into the world by an unexpected flood. With no job and no other prospects, the three decide to take off and see the country but first they have to drop off the incredibly comfy handmade couch that their apartment contained. Which starts off as a simple enough project but then things quickly start getting strange and no matter how hard they try and rid themselves of the couch, they find themselves struggling on, bearing the couch into strange new adventures.
I thought the book was fun. Maybe a bit too much hand waving at the end, but overall a fun read. I was reminded a bit of The Crying of Lot 49, although the prose wasn't nearly as dense, more the spirit of the thing.
You can read an excerpt here to get a taste and see if it hooks your imagination too.
