For what might be the first time, the state Attorney General's Office charged Friday, an Erie debt-collection company resorted to theater -- people dressed like sheriff's deputies and bogus court proceedings in a mock courtroom headed by a person dressed in black -- to intimidate consumers into making immediate payments, providing access to bank accounts, or surrendering vehicle titles and other assets.

I'm having a hard time parsing that sentence. I take it that some corporation intimidated people by pretending to be a court?

Yup.

If the debtor showed up with a lawyer, the whole thing got called off.

Wow. Such language! Who knows what the word "Prothonotary" means without looking it up? Not me! (chief clerk, but why capitalize it, and why cap Subpoena, Judge and Court? Generally, random capitalization makes me suspect things are not kosher.)

That's the court summons equivalent of HELLO I AM DR ROBERT NDOGO FORMER DEPUTY MINISTER OF EXCHEQUER OF REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE, right there.
