But you don't have to take my word for it

Hey,
So, here's what I've been reading lately:
"Deadhouse Gates" by Stephen Erikson -- Book 2 in the Malazan series, this one was pretty good. It's certainly a nice follow-up to "Gardens of the Moon". I'm not sure how anxious I am to move on to the next book in the series. Initially, there wasn't quite as much focus on the battle scenes as I would've liked, but it got better as it went along. It moved well between the different story threads and I didn't get terribly confused over the 900-page haul. So I liked it. Although I'm finding a preference for shorter stories now.
"Light" by M. John Harrison -- It's quantum physics sci-fi. And because of it, the book happens in the future and the past. Which is the problem. The stuff written in the future is really great. I liked it a lot. Moreso when it was focusing on the space battles, but everything about the future was good. The "past" (circa 1999) is a lot less compelling. Maybe I've just been burned one too many times in the past by protagonists who are serial killer losers in messed up relationships, but I just really couldn't care less about the story taking place in the present. Also, the ending was just a tad telegraphed.
What's next? Well....NaNo, so I probably won't be doing much in the way of reading. But we'll see.
later

Date: 2004-11-01 06:23 am (UTC)You should check out the risen empire series. Lucas can hook you up with the author's name. Two books, maybe 600 pages between both. I bet both are now in soft cover.
(Lucas read an Ian Banks book first and was less thrilled with it than Carolyn and I, who read Risen Empire first before moving on to C. Phlebas (sp))
