I got _Stations of the Tide_ (1991) mainly because I was so blown away by _Vacuum Flowers_ (1987) which I still think is one of the most groundbreaking novels in SF history. It blew open the doors of cyberpunk, inspired Star Trek's Borg as well as countless others. Check it out.
