My local library's Children's Room had nearly the whole Tom Swift Jr. series when I was a kid. I read them all several times - kept checking them out periodically even after getting my Big Library card, much to the puzzlement of the staff. A few years ago, when I moved back to town, I went back to renew my acquaintance and was told that they'd got rid of them all because nobody else had checked them out for years and they were taking up a bunch of shelf space that clearly could've been better served housing Sweet Valley High books or some damn thing. Mere mortals cannot conceive of my heartbreak. They didn't really make me want to be an engineer, so they failed in that respect, but I figure they're at least a big part of the reason why I almost always root for the engineer characters in sci-fi.

I later found a single one of them on the charity shelf at the local supermarket (a place where exiles from the town library often end up), and by a strange coincidence it happened to be Tom Swift and his Jetmarine. So that's the only one I've read in probably 20 years.
