What you do is buy up rings of fire resistance and then fireball away.

My other big trick was giving the monk an amulet with Anti-Magic Shell on it. I could drop spells while he sprinted up to the bad guy without hurting the monk and the Monk would then grapple the evil spellcaster and shut them down. Fun stuff.
