Adjo's Journal (5 of N)
Hey,
So much to say, so little time to say it. Perhaps my last notes before that frost ogre kills us all. It's really been a terrible day so far.
Right, so we were standing around a collapsed bridge trying to figure out what to do. Despite some considered appraisals, we decided not to use the halfling as a grappling hook. Instead, we decided to head down a side passage where the Gibbers had poured out at the end of our last battle. We left Thrace and the halfling behind.
We come to this large room. There's another balcony and some stairs going down and on the far wall is a large iron portal that's been hacked through and a number of tables and workbenches (including a massive pile of chain).
Taras, Alanna and myself head for the portal, Blaze and Kestrel go for the stairs, Hendel checks out the stairs going down. The balcony has some Dwarven skeletons strewn about. The portal is giving off waves of cold and beyond it we can see mounds of snow and stuff. There's obviously some magical effects involved, but there are no markings on the door or around it. The pile of chains turns out to be a massive chain net. None of this looks particularly good.
That's when the hand lashes out from behind the portal and freezes Taras in his tracks and the skeletons come to life.
What's attacking Taras (and soon, Blaze, Kestrel and Alanna is some sort of dessicated, freeze-dried Dwarf. A sort of Dwarf Jerky Golem I suppose. Anyway, he really hated my fire attacks, but once the others closed in around him, it was no good and I had to switch to magic missile. The enemy was dealing out horrific cold damage with lots of nasty side effects and I was quite happy to find myself some distance back.
The problem is that this fight took most of our party's attention so we had trouble focusing on the other events going on around us in the room. Such as:
About this time I finally sink a magic missile into the frozen dwarf creature and it dies...in a nasty burst of frost that got everyone near it but me. Full marks to the Wizard. Once they got some healing and shook off the effects of the cold, we were able to roll up the rest of the gibbers and skeletons.
I'm sure the scout has a name. I think he's a Elf (well, it's either that or an Eldarin). It's really far too early to be dealing with these tiresome personal details especially when we've just gotten one new guy already. Apparently Dunhouse sent in a second group (without telling us a trivial detail that certainly won't increase the chances of a friendly fire accident). Anyway, they got jumped and scattered and so we might run into some more of the poor fellows later.
Anyway, with a bit of time to patch up our wounds we have to decide what to do. Considering that the underground complex has just suffered major damage in a seismic event, the obvious thing to do is bug out and go home before aftershocks bring the whole thing down around us.
So, of course, we venture deeper into the earth going down the stairs the Gibbers came up.
We turn left and soon arrive at another pillar filled room with a low barricade in front. There is further evidence of damage from the earthquake here as well. More sinkholes and a small poll on one side. We spread out into the room. Blaze goes to investigate the pool and promptly throws herself in. Not typical behavior so we knew something was up.
We rush forward to help Blaze and that's when the Varten reveals itself in a little alcove some 40' above the floor. The horrid little wretch casts some sort of snowblind spell and I'm freezing and can't see. I hug the pillar I was next to and try to clear my vision, but it takes some time. Finally, my eyesight clears and I see that there are a half dozen beefy gibbers lead by a Captain and something very large and loud coming down the corridor. I attempt to return a little spellfire at the Varten, but he simply puts that cursed blindness on me again!
Blinded once more I continue to circle around the pillar out of his line of sight and just curse and swear and blink.
My vision has just cleared. It looks like most of the Gibbers are down but there's a huge Frost Ogre thing about to turn Thrace and Taras into scap metal and scraps. Luckily, I'm far enough back for a hasty retreat should one become necessary. I can only hope that the return route to the surface hasn't been blocked off.
More later...if there is a later.

The problem is that this fight took most of our party's attention so we had trouble focusing on the other events going on around us in the room. Such as:
- A minor earthquake rocks the facility causing a huge sinkhole to open up in the room and large chunks of masonry to fall from the ceiling -- I was nearly crushed to death.
- More skeletal dwarves rise up out of the sinkhole
- Gibbers come up from downstairs to see what all the noise is about -- and promptly get into a fight with the skeletons which was about the best thing to happen the entire fight.
- A section of wall gave way and a scout from another unit arrived. Which was good.
- He was followed by two drake hounds, which was horrible.
- But then Ander (the halfling) and Thrace show up.
