And speaking of, have you read _Winterbirth_ by Brian Ruckley or _The Summoner: Book One in the Chronicles of the Necromancer_ by Gail Martin? They both showed up on the amazon "if you like this you'll like that" listy thing and at least look okay from the blurb.
