That one was a good overview that I read when I was working on a stage magic game, but there was something about Steinmeyer's tone I didn't like - can't remember what exactly anymore.
Others I thought were better overviews of the subject and the golden age of magic in particular were "The Master Magicians: Their Lives and Most Famous Tricks" by Walter Gibson (yes, the creator of the Shadow) and "The Illustrated History of Magic" by Milbourne Christopher.
