Shouldn't something reaching 15,000 degrees C have a rather immediate and dramatic effect on the sulfuric acid surrounding it?

Of course. Although the amount of acid that gets to that temperature will immediatly be cooled back down by the rest almost instantly, but not before a photon or two can be liberated. It will be interesting if they can make it very efficient. How much sound energy does it take to liberate a photon? TANSTAAFL!
