Better RED than dead
It's true. I'd rather watch the movie RED than be dead.
So yeah, RED is the comic book adaptation of retired spies coming out of retirement because someone is sending assassins after them. Bruce Willis is always Bruce Willis-y, Morgan Freeman is the calm voice of reason, "Being" John Malkovich is the paranoid everyone really is out to get and Helen Mirren is the Martha Stewart of assassins (side note -- if you google Helen Mirren, it includes links and a selection of pictures, one of which is a fairly recent picture of her in a bikini and...um...damn).
It's a big dumb action picture and it enjoys the hell out of itself. Karl Urban is actually great as the uber-competent CIA agent sent to track them down and kill them. Sure, he constantly gets outsmarted, but he keeps up pretty well. He also apparently has the authority to basically level major industrial centers, on US soil, in broad daylight. I gotta wonder what the clearance process for that must be like.
So yeah, no great shakes, but better than you might be expecting. My suggestion? If you're local to the Marlborough area, go to the Horseshoe Pub in Hudson for dinner beforehand. It's Octoberfest so they've got this separate German menu -- 20 different meals in a foreign language but it all boils down to meat, potatoes and cabbage. Way tasty and they've got this "Dinner and a Movie" deal where you can get tickets to the show for a discount. So you can watch your big dumb movie on the big screen for cheap(er).
